I used my AncestryDNA to get the two free reports. In the Free Kick report. which shows you how you might perform as a soccer player, they first analyzed my potential performance under stress using the COMT gene.
COMT helps regulate your levels of dopamine, a chemical messenger that impacts decision making, coordination, motivation, and pain tolerance. My COMT gene variant is associated with higher dopamine levels, giving me better strategy skills but more vulnerability to stress.
Next, I see my risk for a hamstring injury. The genes in the Hamstring Injury Panel influence the development, growth, strength, and healing of connective tissues. These include MMP3, IL6, TNC, and NOS3. The genetic variants found in my Hamstring Injury Panel are linked to moderately increased risk of hamstring injury. Maybe that’s why I’ve always had tight hamstrings and reoccurring low back pain.
Lastly, they analyze how you might stack up with endurance and power. The ACE gene is involved in blood pressure regulation and how your body delivers oxygen and fuels to your muscles as you exercise. ACE is indirectly linked to the development of fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers. My ACE variant could make me more adaptable to situations where a mix of endurance and power abilities are ideal.
I’ve always thought how great it would be to have an owner’s manual for my mind and body. Instead of guessing what fuel I should be using and how and when to do preventative maintenance, I’d know. I think, with companies like Athletigen, we’re getting really close to that.
